Annabel Lee by Edgar Allan Poe

The speaker believes about Annabel Lee’s death that the angels above are the reason why his beloved died. The angels got jealous by the love that he and his lover shared together.

Their love for each other is stronger than those couples he knew. Their kingdom in the sea witnessed how happy there are even though they are still both young. As long as they’re together, no one could steal their attention because they have no other worries except to love and love only. The main reason why the speaker really be certain of that angels were envious of him that’s why they decided to take Annabel lee from him to tear them apart, ending her life.

2. Do you think the speaker love Annabel Lee for decades or just a short time? Why?

Support your answer with a line from the poem.

I think the speaker only love Annabel Lee for just a short period of time since this maiden died at the young age. The speaker was still a child same with Annabel Lee but it was clearly stated that even though they were young, their love was real, the speaker believes that he loves Annabel lee sincerely,

based on this line from the poem:

“I was a child and she was a child,

In this kingdom by the sea,

But we loved with a love that was more than love—

I and my Annabel Lee— “

On the other side, even though it was said that the angels take away Annabel Lee from him by ending her life. Still he clearly tells us that even angels nor death could take his soul and love for his beloved Annabel Lee, as if he doesn’t care whether she’s physically here or not, no one could tear them apart. His love for Annabel Lee will remain forever as long he lives and meets her soul in his dreams.

“And neither the angels in heaven above,

Nor the demons down under the sea,

Can ever dissever my soul from the soul

Of the beautiful Annabel Lee “

3. Do you think the poem is about true love or obsession? Why?

For me, the poem is about true love. He met and love Annabel Lee during his childhood days, they were so in love that this kind of experiences manifest in his memory and heart. The speaker undoubtedly tells us that even though they are still young, his love for her is profound or too deep. And time comes that the angels became envious and take her away, and it really hurts because the speaker continue loving her despite of this. It is indeed true love because it may have ended a tragic love for him wherein he always came to her grave in the sea to sleep with her every night, this only means a lifelong commitment, that he will never going to love another woman again.

4. How did the life of the author influence the poem Annabel Lee?

According to some information from this module, the author “Edgar Allan Poe” who wrote this influential and a very sad piece, it was said that Edgar Allan Poe suffered depression because he lost his wife at a young age. Maybe he wrote this poem to serve as a remembrance of his undying love towards his wife that even in their next life, he will still continue to love her. His grief and sorrow influence him to write this poem to express how he mourn so bad about losing his beloved wife, especially that this is his last piece that he wrote after the death of Virginia Clemm.

5. What do you think is the reason why the angels of heavens were jealous of Annabel

Lee? Support your answer with a line from the poem.

The reason why the angels of heavens were jealous of Annabel Lee is that Annabel Lee and his lover at a young age fell in love with each other to the point that it can make anyone feel envious and covetous. Their love for each other is higher and stronger than the love that shared by those lovers they knew.  As it was stated in the line from the poem:

“I was a child and she was a child,

In this kingdom by the sea,

But we loved with a love that was more than love—

I and my Annabel Lee—

With a love that the wingèd seraphs of Heaven

Coveted her and me.”

Another line from the poem explain that the angels in heaven were not happy seeing the two of them so in love with each other. Angels depicted here as jealous kind of creatures. Angels might felt envy of being not capable of loving the same with how these two young lovers do.
